Secret Gardens We Shared
我們的秘密花園

Secret Gardens We Shared 我們的秘密花園 is a collaborative project between artist ponnapa prakkamakul and Chinatown residents from the Resident Leadership Academy, a program by Asian Community Development Corporation (ACDC) in collaboration with the Mel King Institute. ACDC’s Resident Leadership Academy aims to equip residents with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to design and advocate for their neighborhood.

During the mural co-creation process, ponnapa interviewed past residents, Cynthia Yee 余麗馨 (5-7Knapp Street), Gwen Liu 劉以寬 (9 Knapp Street), and Jennie Chin Hansen 陳禎娜 (77 Harrison Avenue) for inspiration. The design intends to extend a safe space from interior through large “drapes" on these “windows” to the exterior. Drawing from the oral history from former residents during Combat Zone period, the design of the mural resembles large “drapes” on these “windows” that mediate the interior and exterior worlds. The pattern was designed by present-day Chinatown residents from RLA program.
